A month-long stay is priced like rent but spends like travel. Budgeting only for the room is the mistake nearly everyone makes once.
Build the budget in four buckets
-
Housing — rent, deposit, electricity, and any cleaning fee
-
Transport — bike rental, fuel, or ride-hailing for the whole month
-
Food — cooking a few days a week changes this line more than anything else
-
Work — co-working membership, SIM card, and data
Deposits are the hidden first-week cost
Many long-stay properties ask for a deposit alongside the first invoice. It comes back, but it is cash you need up front — plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
“Assume your first month costs about 1.3× your steady-state month. After that, the number settles.”
Ask for the all-in number
Before you commit, ask the host to confirm the total for the full stay including electricity and cleaning. A good host answers in one message.
