How to Choose the Right Coliving Space

Coliving sells a feeling — community, flexibility, a ready-made social circle. What actually determines whether a month goes well is much more boring: internet speed, kitchen access, and how thin the walls are.

1. Ask for a real speed test

Listings say "high-speed WiFi" the way restaurants say "fresh ingredients". Ask the host for a screenshot of a speed test taken in the actual room, at night, when the house is full.

2. Check what the price includes

  • Electricity — often billed separately, and air conditioning is not cheap
  • Cleaning frequency and whether your private room is included
  • Laundry, water, and whether there is a deposit

3. Look at the common areas, not the bedroom

You will spend most waking hours outside your room. A beautiful bedroom attached to a dark, cramped common space makes for a long month.

“The single best predictor of a good coliving stay is whether there is somewhere comfortable to sit that is not your bed.”

4. Match the house to your schedule

Some houses are quiet by 10pm; others are just getting started. Neither is wrong — but a mismatch is the most common reason people cut a stay short. Ask directly what a typical weeknight looks like.

5. Read the reviews from long stays only

A three-night guest and a three-month guest experience a very different place. Filter for reviews from people who stayed as long as you plan to.
